CBBB/CARU’S Public Service Campaign For Children’s Online Safety and Privacy
Advertisers have special responsibilities when advertising to children or collecting data from children when they are online. They must take into account the limited knowledge, experience, sophistication, and maturity of this special audience to which their messages are directed. The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) was enacted to protect children’s online safety. Advertisers cannot collect personal information from children online or follow children online across time and websites without first obtaining verifiable parental consent. Most parents do not know that that is the law or where they may turn when they have questions about it.
The Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU) and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) have created a public service campaign to alert parents about children’s online protection and to direct them to sources of information where they can educate themselves about issues pertaining to their children’s safety. The campaign consists of two different public service announcements (PSAs), each with 30-second and 15-second spots. The campaign is titled “Would you know if someone was following your child online?” which demonstrates in an entertaining but incisive way how children’s online safety may be compromised. CARU’s last campaign, “Do you know where your children are…on the internet?” was nominated for an Emmy Award.
It is important to disseminate this campaign to parents, educators, teachers, business people, and even children so that there may be universal understanding and awareness about the need to protect children’s safety while they are on the internet.
